Travel Medicine

Health care in many parts of the world is grossly inadequate.  To meet the needs of these underserved patient populations, many non-profit organizations provide patient care services to these areas by organizing and transporting medical mission teams.  Unfortunately, the health care professionals who volunteer to provide patient care services are unfamiliar with many of the conditions, disease states and treatments necessary to adequately treat this patient population.  This knowledge-based interdisciplinary activity will cover the common conditions and disease states that health care professionals will experience when providing health care to patients in international locations.  The rational for the use of certain education and the appropriate monitoring to assure safe and effective pharmacotherapy of these conditions and disease states will be presented.  Case studies will be used to assist participants with formulating a plan for patient care and patient counseling for disease states and medications common for travel medicine.
