USP 800 Controlling Hazardous Drugs Excreted by the Patient - Pharmacists

Cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs are acknowledged as some of the most dangerous chemicals ever created. Industries involved with these chemicals have implemented extreme safety protocols. Chemotherapy Patients are unwittingly excreting these chemicals in active form in their urine, feces, and vomit, after every treatment. In December 2019 United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 800 will force the providers of cancer treatments to provide collection systems for the human waste as stated by the Joint Commission, OSHA and the World Health Organization. This course gives the history of why these regulations were put in place, who is responsible, and how to solve this problem in a safe compliant and cost-effective standard of care. We discuss how patients undergoing live saving treatments can protect their families, caregivers and the environment from the cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs as they exit the body.
